LJ’s oak tree, Ashton Court, Bristol

The leaves of an oak tree frame a large mirrored box surrounded by long grasses. It is a cloudy day and the surfaces of the box are reflecting the sky, grass and trees around it.

On a mixed day of sun, clouds, wind and showers, the Mirrorbox was placed next to L.Jโ€™s oak tree at Ashton Court. On a high point of a hill it looked out across the city to the countryside beyond. Volunteers Kate and Sarah describe the day;

โ€œFrom the Mirrorbox you can see the whole of Bristol into the distance, Kelston Round Top to the East and Dundry Hill to the South. Nearby are meadow grasses, salsify seed heads and the most beautiful old gnarly oak tree which I had never noticed before. People take their time in the box and outside too. They visit the oak tree which L.J. loves. Some people want to linger and talk about their own experiences of ME or Long Covid. It is a moving and reflective experience.โ€ Kate

” We were surrounded by birds skylarks, robins, coal tits and goldfinches. People walking dogs, people sitting quietly around the Mirrorbox. I have found it nice to be here, slow and gentle. It makes me realise that art doesn’t need to be in a gallery, and is about people not canvas and oils.” Sarah
