Be Here – Testing a virtual place

Photograph of a phone in a person's hand with the Virtual Mirrorbox experience on-screen.

Weโ€™re really excited to share with you a new  experimental way to visit a message location virtually. With funding from Immersive Arts, we are exploring how we might be able to experience places that weโ€™re unable to access in person.

Of course, it wonโ€™t be the same as being there in real life but we wanted to give those of us who are curious but canโ€™t visit the Mirrorbox in person, a way to explore what it is like. No one can change the reality of not being able to get to these places, but perhaps it can offer another way of experiencing itโ€ฆ

We would love for you to be part of this initial testing stage. Let us know what you think about this first version. ย

Things to know before you begin:

  • This experience works best on a phone or tablet.
  • When you click TEST , youโ€™ll arrive at Ashton Court by L.J.โ€™s oak tree.
  • Move your phone, tablet (or click and drag on computers) to look around the space and you can listen to L.Jโ€™s message
  • Use the menu to show and hide the Mirrorbox, and to step inside it.

The immersive experience uses your phoneโ€™s motion to allow you to look around the scene by moving your device. If you experience motion sensitivity, you can disable this motion by selecting Disable Movement from the menu.

Let us know what you think.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this experimental way to experience the Mirrorbox, even if it’s just a few words. Please click the button below to leave your feedback.

Accessibility information

Background sounds

These ambient sounds were recorded on location and are not currently adjustable. They will play when you’re outside of the box. Let us know if adjustable sound would be useful in future versions.

Motion controls

If you’re using a phone or tablet, the experience will use your device’s motion sensors to allow you to look around the scene by moving your device. You can turn this off by choosing Stop Movement from the menu.

Subtitles and audio description

This early work-in-progress experience doesnโ€™t yet support subtitles or audio descriptions, but weโ€™re working to make this a priority for future updates. In the meantime, a full transcript of LJโ€™s message can be found here, or from the Transcript option in the menu.

Explore the message location

This virtual Mirrorbox was placed in Ashton Court, Bristol in June 2025 โ€” at a location chosen by L.J. Click TEST to experience the virtual location or, to just hear L.Jโ€™s message, click the Message button.
